The Animal Medical Center is the world's largest, busiest, full-service veterinary facility with 83 medical, surgical, and research veterinarians and board-certified specialists in the areas of internal medicine, cardiology, neurology, oncology, surgery, dentistry, ophthalmology, emergency medicine, dermatology, radiology, and pathology. The Avian and Exotic Pet Service consists of four full and part-time staff members, two residents and two rotating interns from the small animal medicine and surgery internship. Three staff members are certified by the ABVP in Avian Medicine and the fourth is board certified by ACLAM. The department treats 4,500-5,000 animals annually, comprising approximately 50% birds, 30% rabbits and ferrets, 10% reptiles and 10% miscellaneous small mammals. The Avian and Exotic Pet Service is fully integrated with all other services at the AMC, making available the latest technology and equipment for diagnosis and treatment of all aspects of companion animal medicine and surgery. Some of the many sophisticated technologies and therapies employed include echocardiography, computed tomography, nuclear medicine, radiation and chemotherapy, hemodialysis, digital video-endoscopy, arthroscopy, fluoroscopy, thoracoscopy, brainstem evoked potentials, and phacoemulsification. Other than in emergencies, patients should get a referral from their pet's regular veterinarian and make an appointment.
