Why do we have so many guinea pigs for adoption?
The number one reason guinea pigs are surrendered is "loss of interest, or allergies!"
Because typically guinea pigs are bought from local stores at 4 weeks old and at six to twelve months old the kids have lost interest in them and the parents are not prepared to be responsible for the guinea pigs after that point. So they are dumped into local animal shelter. At these shelters they sit because no one thinks to look for them there. And they often face euthanasia. That is why our organization was created.
Working with Denver Metro Shelters we take these guinea pigs in, assessing their personalities and behaviors working to find them a good permanent caring home. Dogs and Cats pack animal shelters and we understand why. Is it that far a stretch to realize the same thing is going on for small animals? Then these small animals sit. CCI is the only guinea pig shelter in Colorado, servicing Wyoming, Kansas and some parts of California. We are donation driven organization. We are making the most of our money, helping over 7000 guinea pigs in the last twelve years. Again, it is not about how many we have placed, but the quality of homes they are placed into.
